Goldwings gather at Kirkby

thumbs klbbq011 Goldwings gather at KirkbyFrom the number of post’s submitted about this weekend I would say a good day was had by all. However, two hours before the start of the bar b cue on Saturday the weather was absolutely atrocious. The rain was being driven sidewards and the marquee was being battered and held down by soggy volunteers. For some reason most of the members had decided to take a walk into Kirkby Lonsdale for a quick look round. We were very lucky not to lose the marquee. From all views it looked like the bar b cue would be a disaster, and with the club house booked on the Saturday night with a 21st birthday bash we had nowhere to run to.thumbs klbbq021 Goldwings gather at Kirkby

Thursday’s advance party turned up in glorious sunshine and had the pick of spots to set up their caravan’s and motor homes. Little work actually took place on the Thursday due to us all taking the opportunity to have a sit in the sunshine and polish of some Pim’s and Famous Grouse shandy. Friday morning came with the same weather plus the marquee, trestle tables and bar b cue equipment. Its amazing what you can pack into a trailer. The fun began when we decided to erect the marquee without any instructions. Stuart confirmed he had seen the structure thumbs klbbq041 Goldwings gather at Kirkbybefore and had a clue as to what it should look like but had no idea how it went together. Surprisingly the whole thing came together quite quickly and in no time the marquee was erected and pegged down for the Saturday’s event. The photo gallery gives an impression of the chaos created during the build. Many more Goldwing North West members and their guests started to arrive during the afternoon along with our friends from Goldwings North Wales and the guys from Southport  Cruisers. Barry turned up with yet another type of abode, this dwelling however needed the assistance of almost everyone on site to get it erected. By the time it was all up you could haver parked half a dozen wings in the tent area and host the bar b cue at the same time, talk about luxury. I wonder whatthumbs klbbq061 Goldwings gather at Kirkby he will turn up with next time.  The evening ended with us all retiring to the club house for a few beers and an opportunity to meet new people. No idea what time it all ended but everyone seemed to having a good time talking to old and new friends. Saturday dawned to wet weather, this however didn’t deter several members from going on a ride out around the locality. As the day progressed the weather just got worse and the rain and wind looked like putting an end to the bar b cue.  Thankfully the immediate past weather master weaved his magic and by 3:15 the sky was clear and amazingly the sun shone. Allegedly 20 miles south in Preston the weather had been good all day long. As the sun shone more and more visitors started to arrive. Stuart fired up the bar b cue and the ladies prepared salads and buns. John and Toni brought along two legs of thumbs klbbq131 Goldwings gather at Kirkbylamb which had been marinating for three days previously. Both legs were dumped on the barbie along with a feast of other delights. By the time the first meat was being served almost 60 members and visitors had gathered in and around the marquee, the sun shone and a splendid evening began. A couple of Harleys and several Goldwings took centre stage in the sunshine and lots of beer and food were consumed. Who would have thought that 2 hours previously it was almost all off.

No problem with you only being able to make the Saturday. Its a shame you wont be staying over with us, have you thought about a B&B in the town itself or maybe a one man tent affair next to a base camp style motor home.
As for ordering a cow, would that be Aberdeen Angus or just your everyday run of the mill type?

  10. Come on Bob, we only do Aberdeen Angus.

  33. Dear Bob and all “Wingers”

Thank you for the weekend, you all made us very welcome. Sorry we had to leave so abruptly. Our Tim had an unpleasant side effect of a recent operation and we had to get him back to Southport quickly. He stayed in A & E last evening but is home OK again. We were sorry to miss the “Barbie” you had gone to a lot of trouble. Hope to see you all again sometime soon.
(special appreciation to “Nurse ” Jackie for her help)

Regards Pam, Derrick & Tim Moss Southport Cruisers

  34. Derrick
Glad to hear that your Tim is OK. Jackie said he needed to get to hospital pretty quickly.
Sorry you didn’t get to sample the food at the bar b cue, I’m sure Turkey or even John can vouch for it. Suffice it to say you are welcome to come to the next one we have. Have a safe summer, whats left of it and we will see you about.
    Bob

  35. What a good weekend we all had yet again, it was a bit windy and alittle bit drizzley at first but the sky was blue and the sun did us proud for the bbq. I reckon there must have been 70+ there, the food was excellently cooked by Stuart, then Neil took over, the lamb from Eddie was delicious as promised.
We owe a huge thank you to Stuart for making it possible with the loan of the marquee and various other bits from friends and of course his bbq, the marquee was very large but we had to improvise and add a couple of gazebos to fit people in, although some stayed in the evening sun.
Thank you Stuart for finding such a lovely place last year and organising revisiting this year, it must be one of the most beautiful locations in the country.
We had lots of fun, met new people and even got new members. When are we doing it all again please uncle Bob? Roll on the next event.
    See you all very soon.
    Judy.
P.S. But next time Bill please don’t let Frank borrow your ledderman thingy, it’s too sharp, his finger is just about hanging on in there.

  36. A big thanks to all who organised the weekend. You cant do anything about the weather but despite that it was a great break away from the grind. It was nice to spend time with a great crowd of people plus the bonus of the other clubs joining in. Friday evening went far to fast it was a comfortable evening spent with you all.
My latest trial by canvas is now under DEEP CONSIDERATION
while i write this i am sorting a different mode of non canvas camping.
Once again A BIG THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR MAKING THE WEEKEND POSSIBLE……………

  37. Dear Sir,

Since allowing my husband to buy a goldwing life has changed a lot here. He told me goldwings and clubs were great and they go away a lot but not to worry as the main expense was the bike itself and the going away was usually done under a tent! I worried about that, my husband is a large bloke (and a bit of a snob) and him and tents probably haven’t met since he was about nine. He did Woodvale in a 3 man tent, never again he said, he did Kirby Lonsdale in a 4 berth trailer tent with awning, didnt like that the awning took too long to put up even though it became a group event. He is now planning something else. God help us, but if anyone is interested in a kidney mine is now advertised on ebay!

    Yours

    A stressed wife!!

ps even travelling up and down the motorway each day didnt spoil the weekend for me I loved it, met some lovely new people, oh and met up with old friends too. Thanks xx

  38. Since the weekend i have found the bible for weekends away.
No its not the directory of travel lodges. wait for it………
Its PRACTICAL MOTORHOME MAGAZINE its the way forward.
Dont know if they do a 4berth goldwing camper yet but i will find the way.

    p.s
can you live on no kidneys????????ebay lives

  39. Dear Stressed wife, Please remove your kidney from e bay – there is no need to get that stressed. Sit Barry down 1 nite and discuss wot he wants 2 do in order and then just put your wifely foot down and say no!!!! (a couple of nites on the couch works when trying to convince your man u are right!!!) The Baylis clan enjoyed the barbie no end – was able to partake in my fav tipple vodka and coke and meet some more friends and play silly games it made the night. Was kept awake all night at hotel while they made a new door which toni had pulled off as we were leaving. Have got bbq working now – so next time we shall have a working barbie. Thanks to Stuart for putting up with eddy – but I feel they make a good team what next a hog roast??

  40. Can we take this opportunity to thank everybody at Kirby Lonsdale at the weekend,we really enjoyed the weekend, meeting others with the enthusiasm about there goldwings and enjoying themselves. We had a great time and will be doing it again, We are now trying to get “Goldwings-East Yorkshire up and running ASAP.(WATCH THIS SPACE),Thanks to Bob, Stuart and Dave, in fact everbody for a great weekend, all the best,Steve & Julie.

  41. Hi all, sorry to sound repetative but what a great weekend, inspite of what the weather did to us. Same as usual great company makes a great weekend. See you all soon.

  42. Got to agree with everyones comments so far. Lot of hard work behind the scenes to make the weekend happen, but the highlite for me as Chair was the fact we had possibly the founders of a new Federation club, Goldwings East Yorkshire, Julie & Steve Lapsley from Bridlington attend, plus several members from Southport Cruisers. Both parties enjoyed the weekend. Derek from Southport Cruisers thanked us for allowing his Goldwing riding members to come along and see what we do as an organisation. I was very pleased to see that the two Harleys that also arrived were treated with the interest they deserved and the number of GNW members who had their photo’s taken on board was a surprise. All parties concerned got on well and a great weekend ensued. I’m sure we will host the guys from Southport Cruisers on future occassions.
Thankyou to everyone who participated in the success of the weekend.
