Southport Airshow 26-27th September

The famous Red Arrows display team

The famous Red Arrows display team

Well that was a good day. The meeting in the morning went well, good turn out as usual and an opportunity to chat with some of Lancs & Lakes members in the car park who were on a run out today. Good to see Garry & Joyce back in the fold and also Tony and Christine Frost back with us. Whose idea was it to go to Southport Air show after the meeting? After leaving the Swallow at 11:10 it took over 2 hours through traffic to get to Southport. It was worth it after all the messing about. The solo’s went ahead and arrived in plenty of time to see the Red Arrows doing their stuff whilst the combinations and their escort missed them by around 10 minutes. We all managed to get parked up by the side of the pier head outside the café down by the lake side. Several unknown Goldwing’s tagged along and parked up with us, presenting a formidable sight.

Apparently the Air Show cost £25.00 to park your car on the beach and view the displays. No idea why anyone would want to do that when you get an excellent view of the display virtually anywhere within Southport. First thing on the agenda was a good portion of Fish & Chips from the Pier Café, suitably fed and watered we settled down to watch the aircraft display. The highlight was the Vulcan bomber which arrived a little late around 4:15 pm. and gave a superb display along the promenade area. By 5:00 most wingers had decided to risk the traffic chaos and make their ways home. Good day had by all.

  1. What a great day out yet again with good company. Planes & goldwings what a way to spend a sunday cant get better than this. Crazy golf too I doubt any of us would make the ryder cup team even as caddys. but good fun was had. ready and waiting to do it all again.

    Barry & Lesley
    p.s
The vulcan was the star of the show worth waiting for

  2. Your right Lesley, It was a long day as well. Jackie & I stayed until well after 5:30 and stopped for a drink on the way home, didn’t get in until after 8:00. Good day though. Jimmy Ryan & Brian Stanford got stuck in all the traffic and took over 2 hours to get home.

  3. May I just say the airshow was superb, Tremendous, we all had a fabulous day
Team Guinot are amazing to say the least, the Red Arrows as spectacular as ever (and the Blades!!), the Vulcan and the Eurofighter leaves everyone amazed!!!

However the only downside was the traffic after the event, 3 hours to get out of Southport (its not worth all that) The Event Staff closed major roads leading out of the town, people had to drive through birkdale, churchtown, meols, then to be told to head for a certain road, which then in turn was closed, disgraceful onbehalf of organisers, next year keep major roads open – cannot believe the sense or lack of from certain event organisers (staff)

Thanks for the show – no thanks for the drive home!!!

Would not go again purely because of traffic chaos!!

  4. There must be a moral there somewhere Bob, Maybe to get there early don’t get a trike or a combo go for a solo every time As you said a great day shame about the traffic.

  5. a little local knowledge sometimes helps – there are ways in and out of southport which the masses are not aware of.
thats what makes living in southport some good knowing all the back ways out

  6. There was a letter in our local paper about this years organisation being poor, and the roads being closed off, the person who wrote it wondered if someone new was doing it because of the lack of stalls on the beach as well as the roads being closed.
Lets hope they revert to past years organisation.

  7. Dear Biggles and Ginger – being a local – you will find that all the roads in and out on that weekend, sefton council decided to close for some strange or stupid reason which left one road in one road out!!

I know Southport just as well as Preston and to be honest – it completely ruined the day.

So if you know next year a route which would be traffic free, may be you should ring sefton council and ask them to keep it open.

Have a great christmas, my last post until next year.

    Have fun everyone!!!
